Queen Anne’s Quick Styx youth lacrosse program has received a national grant that will help local girls learn the game of lacrosse at their elementary schools.
The US Lacrosse Physical Education and Soft Stick Lacrosse Equipment Grant will provide “beginner” lacrosse sticks and balls for 30 girls along with instructional materials to help PE teachers and instructors teach the game of the lacrosse.
The 11-year-old Queen Anne program, which annually provides learn-to-play and advanced lacrosse programs for some 120 second through eighth grade girls attending 33 Seattle-area elementary schools from Queen Anne, Magnolia and Ballard north to Shoreline, is the only organization in the State of Washington to receive the grant from the sport’s national governing body.
Among the first to benefit will be students attending Seattle’s John Hay Elementary School on Queen Anne Hill.
“The grant will go a long way to help younger girls give lacrosse a try without having to learn with the heavier sticks used by the older girls,” said Quick Styx volunteer director George Bergeron, who originally approached John Hay PE teacher Steven Sturm about applying for the grant as a no-cost way to open the door to new activities for his daughters and other students at the school.
“Our hope is that the US Lacrosse grant will give young people another activity choice through their school without impacting budgets," he said.
Nationwide, 136 schools and civic organizations across 38 states were selected for the 2013 Physical Education and Soft Stick Lacrosse Equipment Grants. Ultimately, the equipment grants and workshops are expected to impact some 400 schools and community organizations nationwide.
"Soft stick lacrosse is a wonderful way to introduce the sport of lacrosse to new youth players, and we’re pleased to be able to provide equipment and resources to schools and local organizations nationwide to help expose the game to new participants," said Meghan Mulford, programs manager at US Lacrosse. "The continued support of our equipment contributor for this program, STX, enables us to keep extending the program to more and more communities each year."
