On Oct 28, girls from across Illinois and the midwest attended the Fright Fest 5v5 hosted by Meredith Black at Marquette University. Marquette players and coaches got into the Halloween spirit by officiating games in costume.
On a slightly chilly but eventually clear day, teams of 7-12 girls competed in an open tournament of 7 games followed by a three game seeded playoff tournament. Games were 12 minutes long on 60 x 30 yard fields. In typical 5v5 play, there were no draws after scores with no timeouts and games became very fast paced with a majority of scores by fast breaks.
Several teams from IL finished in the top 4 before the event ended. Notable teams that made it into the playoffs from Illinois were IL Elite (coached by John Brennan and Elizabeth Pinney), Chicago Wind (coached by Bill Santulli), Barrington Club, Lyons Township Club, and a makeshift team from New Trier and Glenbrook South (led by recent commit Charlotte McGuire). One of the best teams of the tournament was the team of high school recruits from across the country that were formed into a team. In all, it was a successful event and girls from IL competed with pride on one of the last events of the outdoor fall season.
